Now that reveals have gone up (on that note: SOME OF Y'ALL WERE FUCKING SNEAKY AND ARE GOING TO RECEIVE EMAILS SHORTLY), I can post this! I was probably overthinking it but thought that a certain omission toward the end of the alphabet might tank my secret identity. To the last few recs!

Merry Christmas, y'all who celebrate, and happy day-off to everyone who doesn't! I hope you have had as lazy and lovely a day as I have. I'm writing this from in front of the Christmas tree, watching the snow fall, so life is pretty fucking grand. IT'S YULETIDE! Amazing Yuletide presents: I HAVE THEM! There is a Madness treat waiting for me as well, apparently, because I contain a multitude of riches this year; I'll add it to this post tomorrow when that archive opens!

EDIT: There were two Madness treats, and I am now officially that ridiculous (SO LUCKY) bastard who got every single one of her requests! This is me right now, with all of my gifts. I saw my letter go out on the pinch hit list; thank you, pinch hitters and treat writers of the world. ♥

Happy Yuletide, gang! The servers are robust and the Force is with my quest to read the entire archive.

Dear Yuletide writer,

OH MAN, YOU'RE THE BEST!!! Yuletide is my favorite time of year and I'm so excited that you are into one of my teeny fandoms; thank you so much for writing a fic for me! Two quick things before I really get my babble going here: I know people sometimes wonder whether holiday-themed stories would be cool with their recipients; they'd be cool with me, if you wanted to go that route! Also cool with me if it's something that comes up: inventing/using original characters as needed!

Things that I love: friendships and family (both blood-related-family and found-family) and people being concerned about & caring for each other, and protecting each other. I'm a sucker for the occasional hurt/comfort. I love nerds, high school narratives, college narratives, competence, humor, and superheroes/spies/spooky supernatural stories. I'm cool with violence and/or sex scenes as long as they work in the context of the story. I tend to prefer stories that mesh well with the general feeling of the source canon; ie: not taking a light-hearted sitcom canon and writing a darkfic of torture and death and maimery. I love humor and warm moments, but if it matches with the canon's feel, I can absolutely go for sadder, darker stuff as well. Go with your own judgment and have fun writing, and I will be absolutely delighted!

Things that I'm usually not into in fiction: incest, explicit rape scenes, infidelity, alternate universe fic (except for Groundhog Day style fics; they are my AU achilles heel), porn without plot.

Now I'm going to talk about request ideas and ramble a bit about what I like about these characters/canons! Please take all of it with many grains of salt; I'm chucking out a bunch of information in the hopes that something in it will be helpful to you, not because I intend it to be a laundry list of stuff that I ~*expect*~ to see in a fic!! I am a windbag when it comes to canons I love. I apologize in advance. Seriously, I am a chronic over-talker, so if you're someone who prefers to work with less outside detail, you can definitely stop reading this letter here!

I am making my slow-ass, determined way through the archives, one alphabet letter at a time! (I'M ON TO THE G's! I'll get to Z eventually!) As for my own Yuletide this year, I wrote seven fics in six fandoms for a total of 14,500 words; I obviously can't confirm or deny anything until after the first, but anyone who successfully guesses one of mine will win a ~*prize*~. If you're reading this on Dreamwidth, you'll probably want to do so in ?style=light, as the regular page view fucks with my formatting like whoa.

MOST ARTICULATE.

So I wrote Yuletide fics all day yesterday, from about three in the afternoon to nine in the morning. It was not my greatest decision ever, when it comes to "things to do while sick," but it was thoroughly exciting and fun and worth it. In the end, I wrote seven (maybe soon-to-be eight; I am eyeing one final Madness prompt) fics, six and three-quarters of which were written in that time period; it's a little over 10,000 words in one day in total. I am grossly proud. And just gross in general. I need to work on my procrastination habits. I feel like they are all HILARIOUSLY OBVIOUSLY written by me. I will accept guesses, though I can't confirm or deny until January 1!

AND: I have two amazing giftfics! Both are for the ridiculous "You Belong with Me" parody video that I pimped the hell out of for weeks, and you should all READ THEM and then go and tell the authors how wonderful they are. No fic will ever exist for this outside of Yuletide, which is part of the reason that I love Yuletide so, so very much.

A Real Florence Nightingale, by anonymous
"Devon!" Devon is wrapped up in a bone-crushing hug, warm lips pressed against his forehead, and all he can do is sink into the embrace and wish he could fall asleep right here in the station. Ed smells so good, like cologne and winter air and home. Ed's sigh ruffles his hair. "You're totally sick, aren't you? And you didn't tell me because you were hoping that ignoring it would make it go away?"

"If it's any consolation, no one feels worse than me right now," Devon says into Ed's shoulder.

"Take me to your dorm so I can chain you to the bed." Ed flushes at Devon's raised eyebrows. "Shut up, you know what I meant."

"Ooh Mister Darcy ooh," Devon says, because it makes sense at the time.

So Devon and Ed are doing study abroad (in different countries) in college, and Devon is in London and sick as a dog, and within about two sentences (actually, when I saw the title), I knew that someone out there who is reading this right now did this for me. It is so sweet and funny and gentle; the loving sarcastic banter is delightful and the nerd jokes are fabulous and, unsurprisingly given that I am 99.9999% sure the writer came from my f-list, completely up my alley. It just made me want to curl up in bed with someone who will cry at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring.

And so the vampire fell in love with Frankenstein, by anonymous
Devon's in his room doing his Spanish homework, all alone since Ed left for baseball practice, when Jenna drops in. She nods toward the (now curtained) window and looks expectantly at Devon. “So, Devon Swan, how is the lovely Edward?”

Horrifyingly, Jenna has realized that the object of Devon’s affections shares a name with a certain sparkly vampire, and she takes a truly unreasonable amount of pleasure in highlighting this fact. The very worst part of this development is not that Devon is an actual Twilight fan and Jenna gets details wrong; it’s that Devon is secretly Team Jacob. (Although, seriously, he will tear his hair out if she proposes that Ed whisk him off to a romantic getaway in “Spoons, Washington” one more time.)

Oh my God, this is such a good Yuletide for me. I really hope that the author comes back and adds a summary, because this fic is wonderful and I want as many people as possible to read it! It walks the perfect balance between cheeky/funny and sweet; watching Devon flail his way through his pining is hopelessly endearing, and I love his slightly-evil-but-well-meaning sister. There is an entire metaphor surrounding sting rays that I want to clutch to my chest and keep close to me forever. The author does neat things with the canon, too, which I don't want to spoil but were a delightful surprise! I thought I knew how the story ended, and then BAM, a surprise!

Dear Yuletide writer:

I am tremendously excited to read whatever you decide to write; Yuletide is my favorite time of year, seriously. A few notes on general likes/dislikes -- I love friendships and found family and people caring about each other, and I'm a sucker for the occasional hurt/comfort. I'm chill with violence and/or sex scenes as long as they work in the context of the story. I tend to prefer stories that mesh well with the general feeling of the source canon; ie: not taking a light-hearted sitcom canon and writing a darkfic of torture and death and maimery. I love the funnies and the warm moments, but if it matches with the canon's feel, I can absolutely go for sadder, darker stuff as well. Go with your own judgment and have fun writing, and I will be a super happy camper!

Just as a general fyi, I selected only one or two characters per fandom while filling out my sign-up, but please don't take that as a sign that I will, like, HULK OUT if you write something that also features other characters! I have warm fuzzy feelings about all of these fandoms and all of these characters, and would love for any of them to be included as you see fit; I just picked my absolute 'oh, please make sure that [x character] is in the story!' favorites while signing up! Second -- slightly more random -- FYI, which is mostly sparked by the fact that I've had this question before while writing for other people: I would be totally fine with a holiday story if that's the direction you decide to go in. If you're someone who likes to get their stalk on, I can be found being inarticulate with ~*feelings*~ at AO3 and on Tumblr, and some past Yuletide letters (some of which I, uh, cribbed liberally from for this one) are here and here.

Things that are not generally my bag: alternate universe fic (except for Groundhog Day style fics; they are my AU achilles heel), mpreg, sex without plot, incest, BDSM themes, explicit nonconsensual sex or explicit sex of dubious consent, character bashing, slut shaming, female characters being reduced to bitches or damsels in distress.

And here is where I ramble a little bit about prompt ideas, but mostly about my feelings on these canons and these characters, which may or may not be helpful! I threw a couple of animated gifs in, just as a warning. I am a chronic over-talker, so if you're someone who prefers to work with less outside detail, you can definitely stop reading this letter here!

To the surprise of no one, I am sure, since (A) I was really bad at the secrecy this year (I needed a lot of help!) and (B) this thing had my mark all over it --

For [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year, I wrote Listen to Bands That Don't Even Exist Yet, based on the Scott Pilgrim comics, for [livejournal.com profile] bexless. (Rated M; Stephen/Joseph, Stephen/Julie, + pretty much the entire cast; 10,001 words.)
Stephen's mouth goes dry as he watches Joseph curve around his guitar, the body resting on his knee; he's looking down at the strings as he plays, eyes hooded and expression fiercely intent. His hands look strong and sure, long fingers curled around the neck of the guitar and brushing across the nick in the wood just below the soundhole. His hands are touching places that only Stephen usually touches, playing one of Stephen's songs; he could shut his eyes and almost feel the chords and the warm, battered wood under his fingers.

Stephen swallows hard and pours himself another shot of tequila. What this situation needs is more Señor Frog's.

Embarrassingly, several days after the archive opened, I realized why the title had come to mind so readily: it's what [livejournal.com profile] hkath named a Scott Pilgrim comment-fic that was written for me over the summer. So, to give credit where credit is due: 1) I am an idiot! an idiot with the memory of a goldfish!; and 2) y'all should read [livejournal.com profile] hkath's I listen to bands that don't even exist yet. It is Ramona and Kim, and is thoroughly delightful.

Snow is the heaviest ever. I helped shovel the driveway and I'm pretty sure I am going to die now. (It was only eight inches of snow. I am so out of shape. Also, I am a wuss.) On the bright side, I used my snow day to both sleep and power through the [livejournal.com profile] yuletide archive! I'm into the b's. Home stretch! I think this may be the fastest I've ever gotten through the whole thing.

There are going to be some fandoms here that repeat from my last post; this is totally due to Yuletide Madness opening late and not (surprisingly! for once!) due to my organizational ineptitude.

Involuntary Response, by anonymous
On the Road with Austin & Santino RPF
Today Santino is making a nuisance of himself. He's feeling punchy, one of those days when he has too much energy to sit still. He has, admittedly, a lot of those days. He sings loudly, made up songs about the pencil stuck into the little sprout of a top knot in Austin's hair, the sad life it leads trapped above the world, looking down past Austin's nose, watching life pass it by. It's a surprisingly upbeat number considering the subject matter. Santino does a little bit of soft shoe with one of the dress forms, catching the quick moment when Austin stops ignoring him long enough to glance up and shake his head.

This is absolutely wonderful. It's from Santino's point of view, after On the Road with Austin & Santino is canceled (please don't come true in real life!! whoops, I am apparently slow on my entertainment news), and it's all about his friendship with Austin and how he slowly realizes how screwed he is, when it comes to his feelings. The just -- the descriptions and the narrative are absolutely beautiful, and the voices are dead-on and so, so funny (and also bittersweet). The callbacks to the show are wonderful. There is a joke about fuchsia mousseline that you won't understand if you don't know the show, but is perfection and made me laugh for days and days. They dance, and Austin is terrible at it; Austin busts out his very best southern belle. This makes me so happy.

The Curse of the Bambino (And Other Love Stories), by anonymous
You Belong With Me - University of Rochester Yellowjackets (Music Video)
It starts with a little white lie: “Oh, yeah, I’m totally nuts about baseball. I watch it whenever I can.”

That translates to this: “Oh, yeah, I’m totally nuts about you. I’ll listen to you talk about baseball all the time, because it’s important to you.”

That becomes this: “Um, sure, I’d love to watch the game with you. What, tonight? I mean, yes, tonight.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THE WRITER GAVE THE TWO GUYS THE NAMES I USE FOR THEM. HAHAHAHAHA ED IS A RED SOX FAN, YOU ARE ON MY F-LIST, AREN'T YOU. Whether the writer is or isn't (I have my suspicions!), this is fucking darling. It's set in the early days of their friendship and it is DORK-TASTIC and fabulously awkward, and there is a straight roommate who gives terrible advice and makes me howl. I can't believe fic for this fandom exists. I am so dsiugksdjgksg. BEYOND DELIGHTED! This is so funny and so sweet.

I Don't Know What's Happening and I Can't Pretend, by anonymous
Scott Pilgrim comics
The letters EIGHT A.M. appear bold and black over Scott’s face. He has drooled onto his pillow.

The phone rings.

Scott dives under his pillow like a ninja to face his attacker. The phone says STACEY PILGRIM. He opens it.

“Before you ask, yes, I’m late for my interview, no, I can’t figure out what the hell is going on, and I’m totally over Ramona,” says Scott.

“This is getting kind of pathetic,” Stacey says. “I really thought this would have worked by now. Are you even going to try to make it to your interview?”

Scott’s Figuring It Out Meter scootches up to 95.

I asked for Wallace and Stacey teaming up and being made of win. I got the two of them trapping Scott in Thursday to try to make him grow up. I got SCOTT PILGRIM GROUNDHOG DAY FIC, GUYS, HAHAHAHA!! I mentioned my weakness for Groundhog Day fics in my Yuletide letter just for fun! I didn't think I'd actually get one! So happy right now! The voices in this are dead on; there are fabulous touches from the comics, like the time appearing in big black letters over Scott's head, and Scott having a Figuring It Out meter.

At the End of the Week, by anonymous
Ugly Betty
The door to the bathroom is flung open and Amanda appears, hair tousled, skirt hitched halfway up her thighs, holding a white stick above her had in triumph. “I'm not pregnant!”

“Yeah,” Cliff says, taking another bite of pizza. “I kind of figured after the first three tests.”

“Oh, Mandy, not again,” Marc says sympathetically.

“Don't judge me,” she says, stressing each word dramatically. “You have no idea how hard it is being straight and pretty and fertile.” She eyes the pharmacy bag on the counter next to Cliff. “Maybe I should take the last test too, just in case.”

“Go for it,” Cliff says and hands her the bag.

She tosses the already used test up in the air and grabs the wine bottle from Marc's hand.

“I need to hydrate.” Then she heads straight for the bathroom and slams the door behind her.

Cliff looks down at the pregnancy test that has landed right in the pizza box. He looks a little bit nauseous. “I'm so not an expert in these matters,” he says wearily, “but she peed on that, right?”

I am overwhelmed. My heart is going to explode. What is this feeling. Oh right I should probably mention what this is. It's Marc/Cliff, post-canon, where they have to work together on a photoshoot and it's 12,000 words and I am still reading it right now, even as I write commentary, and heart explode not even kidding freaking out. HEARTS IN MY EYES, HEARTS IN MY EYES. AMANDA. JUSTIN. WILI. BETTY AND DANIEL. GENTLEMEN.

You guys I just finished reading and I am freaking the fuck out. I don't even know what I can say in my comment on the fic. I laughed! I cried! I laughed more!

Update on the "Lexie is a raging moron and e-mailed her acceptance form to grad school pretty late in the game" situation: I am still stuck waiting to find out, and no one but me seems concerned about it.

On the brighter side, it is finally snowing! Sort of. Not really. It's spitting little tiny flakes that are melting the second they hit the ground. This has been the worst year ever in terms of weather. What the hell is the point of living here if it's just going to be warm all the time? I broiled all summer long and now it's not even snowing. We've usually had at least one big storm by this point in the season, and yet I am excited over a few tiny flakes today.

I am super excited about it! I just have this problem with doing things in a timely fashion. I'm working on getting better.

I haven't been able to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide yet, because it crashes every single time I try to even open the sign-up sheet. But it's okay -- I can wait. YESSSS! GOT IT. Do you have any idea how excited I was to be able to click the little drop-down that said Star Wars: X-Wing: Rogue Squadron? So psyched that they're allowing it this year; Star Wars as a whole may be huge, but the X-Wing fandoms are among my tiniest.

In other Yuletide news, I have been F5-ing the Yuletide letters list like it's my job. I'm a little sad, because I am having far fewer "YES! someone requested [x]!" moments this year, but I still have a decently-sized list of prompts to set aside. This is why it's an excellent idea to write a letter and to include your fandoms and prompts in it: people like me read them and start writing extra Yuletide treats in November. I know it has become a time-honored personal tradition, but I am determined not to write my story at the last possible second this year. DETERMINED. I'll get it done a few days early, if it kills me! (It might kill me.)
