If you find Discord unusually slow tonight, someone on Twitch accidentally DDOS'ed their servers. They're working on trying to kill the server they created, but with several million people flooding into it, they can't even get to the button to delete it.

So heyyyy, Cassidy and Cassian (bromance names now being accepted) were in the infirmary and stole some drugs but they left notes for the staff. Only Cassian signed his note. Any resulting fallout is welcome. Sorry, Guppy & Co.!

I have never read Dhalgren or indeed any Samuel R. Delaney. However, as of yesterday I have at least had a Dhalgren Experience, thanks to [personal profile] aamcnamara, who turned up a local theatrical-dance-music-light-'architectural puppetry' performance of something called Dhalgren: Sunrise this weekend.

Dhalgren: Sunrise is comprised of bits of text from what I assume is Dhalgren the book, accompanied by dance, light, and music, almost all of it improvised. Also, some of the music was performed on imaginary instruments. "That must be a theremin!" I thought brightly to myself on seeing one of the instruments, mostly because I don't know what a theremin looks like and therefore I assume that any instrument I don't recognize is a theremin. But it turns out it was not a theremin, because there was a credit in the program for 'invented instruments,' though I don't know whether the one I saw was the Diddly Bow, the Bass Llamelophone, or the Autospring.

Anyway, so my new understanding of Dhalgren is that it is about a city in which Weird, Fraught and Inexplicable Things Are Happening. This is not a very thorough understanding, but it's still more of an understanding than I had before. The show is composed of seven scene-vignettes:

Prelude: A brief reading of [what I assume to be] the book's introduction.

Orchid: Three women dance on a bridge and a man acquires a prosthetic hand-weapon-implement. The director at the end gave special thanks to the dude who made it, understandably so, because it very effectively exuded Aura of Sinister!

Scorpions: Gang members dance and fight in front of a building? Alien gang members? Just aliens? Anyway, some entities wrapped in glowing lights have a dance fight in front of a building; the text is from the point of view of a worried inhabitant of the building who Has Concerns.

Moons: The moon has a new secondary moon friend named George. The dancing in this section was one of my favorite bits -- the Moon did some amazing things with her light-strung hula hoop. [personal profile] aamcnamara pointed out later that the narration in this bit, which featured a wry and dubious radio announcer, seemed like a perhaps-intentional echo of Welcome to Night Vale. I have never actually listened to Welcome to Night Vale, but from my cultural osmosis knowledge this seems about right.

Fire: The light show took front and center in this bit about everything being on fire and also, simultaneously, not on fire. The maintenance man doing the narration is very plaintive about all of this. There may also have been dancing in this bit but I don't remember what anyone was doing.

Sex: The guy with the sinister prosthesis has an intimate encounter with two other people inside a blanket fort. I always like the blanket-fort method of showing sex onstage, it hints appropriately while allowing actors not to have to do anything they're uncomfortable with. At some point in this process the sinister prosthesis is removed for the first time, which I expect symbolizes something about human connection.

Sunrise: The characters who have previously just had sex emerge from the building and now seem to have a difference of opinion about whether the sunrise is just normal, or whether the earth is actually falling into the sun. Eventually all the characters are onstage being distressed, along with the music and the lighting -- again, really cool light effects here, especially the final overwhelming projection of light followed by and darkness.

It's a one-hour show without intermission, which we all agreed afterwards was for the best; the deeply weird mood and atmosphere would have been difficult to slip back into if one could get up in the middle to go to the bathroom. For those of you who have actually read Dhalgren, I will leave you with [personal profile] aamcnamara's sum-up: "It was a strange experience, but honestly could have been stranger."

An important revelation

After going around to all the skate shops I could find in Brooklyn (excluding Williamsburg, because ugh, so far away) and Lower Manhattan, I've decided to just stick with my skate school that's two miles away and nice and trustworthy. I just called the owner/founder, and he says that I can order the deck (the main body) online and bring it in to outfit with the rest of the necessities, if I don't see something I love that they have in stock.

Which means I have a couple of decisions to make, and they're hard, so I'm putting it to a vote. Help me out, friends -- there are no bad options, so which one should I get?

Okay, here goes my first daily entertainment post. Since no one did one yesterday, I guess I ought to make sure we don't miss two in a row.

1. The city fireworks show was tonight and it was sooooooo loud and really scared the kitties, but they've all come out of hiding now and seem to be back to normal. I gave them lots of treats when they finally came out.

2. McDonald's has these really tasty blueberry cream pies right now. Carla loves the strawberry ones, too, and has gotten them a bunch, but while I thought those were okay, I wasn't super into them. But these blueberry ones are so good! And it's weird, because I usually like strawberry more than blueberry, but idk. The blueberry one is so much better.

3. Everybody loves this box so much. It's got nice flaps to make you feel hidden, and rustly paper inside to play with. Just the best box. Three out of three kitties recommend.

1. I finished another book tonight, which makes thirty-three for the year so far. I have moved my initial goal from twenty to thirty and then to forty, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to move it again at this rate, because the year's only halfway through.

2. I spoke with the insurance claim person today and she said that it sounded like since we were both backing up, it would be a 50/50 thing, which would mean our insurance wouldn't go up and we would be liable for half the deductible. So, possibly still have to pay a lot in car repairs, depending on how much it costs to repair the damage, but it could be worse.

3. Look at this fluffy Chloe tum! She just loves the tummy scritches. :)

Well, close enough. :) Stella Jaye Floyd arrived earlier tonight. Mom, kidlet and dad all doing fine, so far as anyone's told me. 7 pounds, 13 or 14 ounces (speaker phone made that blurry), and my conversions are rubbish, so... 3 kilos and change?

I need to find a figurine, and by that I mean a proper marble or similar carved one, not a rubbishy plastic one, of a Stellar's jay (I believe that's the name of the bird in question) and present it to her. Not to her folks, although they'll see it. The figurine will be hers.

Despite Baze's initial protests, he and Chirrut have erected a sign warning bar patrons in several languages that the sun burns. The sign is located on the border between the lake and the beach.

The languages are as follows, courtesy of Google Translate Bar's help:
Aurebesh (Galactic Basic): Beware of burning from the merciless sun
English: Beware the burn of merciless sun
French: Méfiez-vous de brûler du soleil impitoyable (Beware of burning the ruthless sun)
Russian: Остерегайтесь ожогов от беспощадного солнца (Beware of burns from the merciless sun)
Japanese: 無慈悲な太陽から燃えることに注意してください (Please be aware that it burns from a ruthless sun)
German: Hütet euch vor dem Brennen von der gnadenlosen Sonne (Beware of burning from the merciless sun)

ETA: Maru has kindly provided a more accurate German translation: "Hütet euch for der Glut der gnadenlosen Sonne," which translates via Google as "Beware of the glow of the merciless sun."

ETA2: Check out Anna's graphic for translations in Wraith, Alteran, and Latin!

Since I have no thread brain and work isn't allowing play anyway, my impulsive self is looking at other pups to play at some point, likely sandboxes cause of bandwidth issues.

America Chavez, because damn you Marvel. You suck, but sometimes you do things right. Plus, she'd be a lot of fun.

Jack Wolcott, from Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series. Thinking of came_tumbling_after as a user name and I have a bunch of icons cribbed from classic b&w horror films with mad scientists for use.

Ehren ex Cursori, from Jim Butcher's Codex Alera. Scholarly spy with a fondness for knives who seems pretty unfazed with life and odd things. About the only way he could be more my jam is if he were a shape shifter or teleporter. Only name I sort of have is study_of_cursors, but I'm not committed to it. I want to read more of the books first before doing anything farther. PBs are either Ben Whishaw or Mika., Ben Whishaw in Perfume: A Story of Murder would work really well.

My sister's in the hospital having kiddo the second. :) It's early days yet, so say my mother and other sister, but...

EeeeeeeEEEEE! :D

Campfire plans for this weekend are thoroughly scuttled, as we knew they might be. Oh well, this is more important. I'm not going up to visit until everyone's home and settled in, which probably means either next weekend or for part of the weekend of the Fourth. But, oh my gosh! :D

I am going to laugh my butt off if it's a boy. Ultrasounds may be highly accurate, but they are not perfect. I know Jordan had them check twelve times, and whether that's hyperbole or not, I don't know; I wasn't there. My point stands.

:) :) Updates to follow.

Is there some bit of canon or plot that you are ignoring as it is a stupid-assed decision?

Bonus question: I recently noticed my profile for a pup was woefully out of date and needed reworking. Post in with your pups and we'll review their profile and offer any suggestions we might have.

1. Went out to lunch with my mom today for my birthday (which is actually Monday). We went to California Pizza Kitchen and I got the carne asada pizza, which was delicious.

2. I got in a car accident on the way home, which sucks a whole lot, but it was on the minor side of accidents, so I'm trying to keep positive about that. There's only a little bit of bumper damage to my car and the other car and no one was hurt. (I had just pulled in a parking space and was readjusting my parking, and the other person was pulling out of her space opposite me, and...crunch.) I'm hoping the repairs don't cost too much, are covered by the insurance, and don't make my payments go up too high. *crosses fingers*

Weekly Reading

What are you currently reading?
I have just one chapter (about twenty pages) left to go in The New Jim Crow, so I will probably finish that either tonight or tomorrow. One thing I learned in the most recent chapter, which I had no idea about is that although prisoners cannot vote while imprisoned, the prison populations are used in creating voting districts and such. Most prisons are built in rural areas with very low, mostly white populations. These areas should hold very little power based on population, but because their numbers are padded by thousands of non-voting (mostly black) prisoners, they gain much more weight. Like the extreme gerrymandering in so many areas, this is nothing but an obvious power grab by republicans who know they don't have the numbers to support themselves in a fair vote. >:(

I'm also just a few chapters away from finishing The Library at Mount Char, too. This book is definitely a wild ride and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends.

What did you recently finish reading?
I finished up Public Library and Other Stories yesterday, spurred on by the fact that it was due back at the library today. Overall I enjoyed the stories, but found the title and cover blurbs a bit misleading. There was no story called Public Library, and the stories were not so much library-themed as language- and book-themed. They were still good stories, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting.

What do you think you'll read next?
Well, I had pre-ordered the new 7 Seeds and just got an email from Amazon last night that it had been downloaded to my ipad, so I will probably be reading that pretty soon. The last chapter apparently came out this month, but I'm not sure how many more volumes that will be since I don't follow the chapters as they're published, but probably just one or two. Maybe more if she does bonus material like she did for Basara.
